Genioplasty
Genioplasty
The chin is an essential aspect of the face that can either facilitate or hinder an adequate degree of balance among facial features.
A genioplasty is when you get surgery to alter your chin. You may get this surgery to reconstruct your chin or jaw. And is most frequently a cosmetic surgery, meaning people choose to have it for looks and not because of a medical problem.
There are two main types of genioplasty: sliding genioplasty and chin implants.
A sliding genioplasty is a type of chin surgery to realign and reshape your chin. A surgeon cuts part of your chin bone and slides the bone forward, backward or sideways. The procedure may help people whose chins aren’t symmetrical or in line with the rest of their facial features.
A chin implant is a surgical procedure to enhance a small or recessed chin. Most people get chin implants for cosmetic reasons, such as improving the definition in their lower face. Some people get chin implants to reconstruct the chin after surgery or trauma.
Genioplasty Preparation
- Medical lab evaluation
- Review medical history
- Talk with your surgeon about your expectations
- Avoid aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to reduce your risk of bleeding
- Avoid smoking, Smoking decreases blood flow in the skin and can slow the healing process
Genioplasty Procedure
- Sliding Genioplasty
Before your chin surgery, you receive anesthesia. Most people get general anesthesia, which means you’re unconscious during the procedure.
During the procedure, a surgeon pulls down your lower lip and makes a horizontal incision (cut) at the base of your jaw line. As the incision scar will be inside of your mouth, it won’t be visible. Your surgeon uses a surgical saw to cut away part of your chin bone. Providers call this part of the procedure an osteotomy.
Depending on the specific type of chin realignment you need, your surgeon may move the cut bone forward, backward or sideways. To shorten a long chin, your surgeon removes the piece of cut bone. To lengthen a short chin, your surgeon may leave a space between two pieces of your chin bone. New bone eventually grows to fill the space.
- Chin Implant
For a chin implant, a surgeon can either cut inside your mouth or under your chin. Before surgery, your surgeon will have sculpted the implant to the right size and shape so it’s ready for insertion.
There are several different types of alloplastic used for chin implants, such as silicone, Teflon, and medpore.
Once the material is implanted, the surgeon stitches up the incision. This procedure can take anywhere from 30 minutes to three hours.
Risks and Complications
Like any surgery, there are some potential complications you could have after a genioplasty, such as:
- Burning or prickling sensation.
- Erosion or resorption of your chin bone.
- Hair loss near the incision (if the incision is on the outside of your chin).
- Implant extrusion (implant pokes through the incision)
- Implant rejection.
- Nerve injury.
- Shifted or misaligned implant
- Tingling or numbness in your chin or lower lip
Recovery
You will likely be pretty sore after your genioplasty. Your discomfort may get worse even when taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). But the pain will lessen as your face heals.
After your surgery, your chin may feel swollen and bruised. You should use an ice pack or cold compress and sleep upright for the first few days. This will help reduce your swelling.
You should also stick to a soft diet for the first few days. Once your chin starts to heal, you can gradually start eating your regular foods. You should still take it easy and not chew a lot of difficult foods. Contact your surgeon if you have:
- Chest pain
- Fever, chills or other flu-like symptoms
- Shortness of breath (dyspnea)
- Signs of infection such as pus or drainage coming from your incision
- Swelling or pain that lasts longer than a few weeks
Unusual pulse or heart rate

1. What should I avoid after genioplasty?
You should be able to resume full social and employment activities in 2-3 weeks. Strenuous exercise and activities should be avoided for 10 days. Body contact sports should be avoided for 6-8 weeks.
2. What can go wrong with genioplasty?
You could get an infection at your incision site, especially if it’s not kept clean during the healing process. You could also get an infection near the small plates or screws that hold your jaw in place. These plates and screws are permanent but infection isn’t likely.
3. How long does it take to fully heal from genioplasty?
Chin reshaping recovery can take anywhere between two and eight weeks, depending on your type of genioplasty. People who get bone work usually take about six to eight weeks to fully heal and people who get implants usually take about two to four weeks to fully heal.
4. How risky is genioplasty?
Potential risks of a sliding genioplasty include: Bleeding. Bruising. Infection.
5. What are the benefits of genioplasty?
Genioplasty benefits patients whose chin size is disproportionate to their other facial features. It can reduce the appearance of a double chin and strengthen the profile to significantly enhance your appearance.
6. How do you sleep after genioplasty?
SLEEPING POSITION: Sleep on your back with your head elevated on 2 pillows for at least 1-‐2 weeks after surgery. Take it easy and pamper yourself. EXERCISE: Avoid strenuous activity & heavy physical exertion for 2-‐3 weeks after surgery.
7. Does bone grow after genioplasty?
Bone will grow back over time and fill this gap. To make your chin shorter, they remove the wedge of bone and reattach your chin to the rest of your jaw. If you’re having your chin moved forward, surgery may create a “step” in the bone.
8. What can I eat after genioplasty?
You may have something to eat once you leave our office, but do not eat anything hot. Start with liquids and soft, non-chew foods: soup, yogurt, scrambled eggs, etc. …
– Hydration is key to recovering. We recommend consuming 8-10 glasses of liquid per day throughout the recovery process.
9. How long does genioplasty swelling last?
The final results of the chin surgery (genioplasty) are not visible immediately after the procedure because of the swelling. Most of the swelling will subside in about two weeks. But there might be some swelling that take nearly six weeks to go away. After this, most patients can start to see the full results.
10. Does genioplasty leave scars?
Chin implants are used in chin surgery (genioplasty) to add volume to the chin and provide symmetry to the face or a more defined contour to the chin. Visible scarring is minimal after the procedure because our experts make the incision either inside the mouth or under the chin.
11. Can genioplasty change your smile?
While your smile may be altered temporarily following surgery, your smile will not be changed in the long term. It is important to follow our post-operative instructions to optimize your healing process and achieve the best possible results
12. How common is genioplasty?
Genioplasty (Chin Surgery): Types, Risks, Recovery, and More
Genioplasty is a relatively popular procedure, accounting for 39% of all plastic surgery procedures.
.
13-Do I feel pain after surgery?
About the first week after surgery, you will be given a simple painkiller to relieve the pain. Because in this case, you will experience the most discomfort. After the first week, you can see over-the-counter pain relievers. By the third week after surgery, most of your pain and discomfort will subside and you will no longer need painkillers.
14-When do I see the final results of my gastric bypass surgery?
It will take some time to see the final result of your gastric bypass surgery. It may take 8 to 12 weeks for the body to return to normal after surgery. By this point, you will most likely notice your weight loss. With proper diet and regular exercise diet you can lose weight. After gastric bypass, you can lose up to 60% of your extra weight during the first two years. Therefore, it is important to remember that this process is not overnight.
15-What effect does smoking / alcohol / drugs have on gastric bypass surgery?
If you smoke, drink alcohol, or take recreational medications, the risk of complications from gastric bypass surgery is greatly increased. In particular, smoking increases the risk of infection and delays the time it takes for your wounds to heal. As a result, we strongly recommend that you stop smoking for at least 6 weeks to 3 months before and after surgery to reduce the risk of complications. We also emphasize the importance of following the surgeon’s advice on smoking and the use of alcohol and recreational drugs.
