Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty
Also known as vaginal rejuvenation, labiaplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that involves modifying the labia minora (inner lips) and/or the labia majora (outer lips). It is usually done for cosmetic reasons.
Your labia are the folds of skin around your vagina opening. You have two folds of skin there. The outer folds are called the labia majora, which means large lips. These are the larger fleshy folds that protect your external genital organs. They’re covered with pubic hair after puberty. The inner folds are called the labia minora, which means small lips. These skin folds protect the opening of your urethra (where your pee leaves your body) and vagina.
Labiaplasty preparation
First, you and your surgeon will discuss why you want to undergo labiaplasty. You’ll discuss your expectations and goals, as well as the risks of the surgery.
Next, your surgeon will explain the details of your surgery, including where they’ll make the incisions and what to expect regarding changes to the size and shape of your labia.
You may undergo presurgical tests, including blood work, urinalysis and chest X-ray. Your surgical team will also give you instructions about:
- What to wear to your procedure.
- When to stop food and drink.
- When to adjust or temporarily stop certain medications.
They’ll also give you other information on how to prepare for your surgery
Labiaplasty procedure
The most common type of labiaplasty is the trim procedure, in which the extra tissue is removed and sewn up directly. Next in popularity is the wedge procedure, which maintains a natural border after a pie-shaped piece of tissue has been removed. Extra folds of the clitoral hood can also be reduced at the same time. Closure is usually done with absorbable sutures.
Risks and Complications
Complications are infrequent, but can include:
- Removing too much tissue or not enough tissue.
- Bleeding.
- Bruising (hematoma).
- Infection.
- Wound breakdown.
- Scarring.
- Ongoing pain, pain with sex or loss of sensitivity
Recovery
It’s usually an outpatient procedure, meaning you get to recuperate at home. But that doesn’t mean the procedure isn’t a big one.
Most doctors will prescribe antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection and anti-inflammatories to reduce pain. In the case that anti-inflammatory meds aren’t prescribed, OTC anti-inflammatories are recommended.
People recovering from the procedure are usually advised to:
- Wear loose clothing to avoid friction and excessive pain.
- Take salt or sitz baths to relieve soreness.
- Avoid exercise and rigorous activities.
- Abstain from tampon use and sex for at least 4 to 6 weeks.

1. What should you avoid after labiaplasty?
It can take a person several weeks to months to fully recover from labiaplasty. During recovery, people should avoid sexual activity, the use of tampons, and strenuous activities. Most people are able to return to usual levels of activity within 1–2 weeks of surgery
2. What do I need to know before getting a labiaplasty?
If you are considering labiaplasty, you may be comforted to know that it is considered a very “predictable” procedure. Labiaplasty is an outpatient surgery that typically takes around two hours. After anesthesia (usually local), surgeons proceed with trimming the excess tissue that was marked prior to sedation
3. What can go wrong with labiaplasty?
A labiaplasty can occasionally result in: bleeding. Infection. Scarring of tissue.
4. What are the disadvantages of labiaplasty?
There are the textbook risks of a labiaplasty such as bleeding, hematoma, and infection. Other risks include wound opening (dehiscence) with prolonged healing, discomfort during sexual intercourse, need for revisional surgery, change or difficulty in orgasm, pain at the incision site, or change of skin sensation
5. How long does labiaplasty take to fully heal?
What’s the short answer? “This procedure tends to have a quicker and smoother recovery for most people,” says plastic surgeon Sean Kelishadi, founder of SSK Plastic Surgery in Newport Beach, California. Typically, full labiaplasty recovery takes 12 weeks.
6. Can I pee after labiaplasty?
Some women experience discomfort when urinating after labiaplasty. If that is the case for you, running warm water over the area as you pee can help to relieve the discomfort.
7. Does labiaplasty hurt after?
Expect moderate pain to last two or three days. After that, the pain should subside. At that point, you can usually go back to your everyday activities with some restrictions. Surgeons typically recommend that you avoid using tampons or doing strenuous activities like exercise and sexual intercourse.
8. Can skin grow back after labiaplasty?
After labiaplasty, your skin won’t grow back. But it can still stretch, especially during childbirth. If you’re bothered by the appearance of your labia or experience discomfort when wearing tight clothing, performing certain exercises or engaging in sexual intimacy, labiaplasty could be an option to consider.
9. Does labiaplasty damage nerves?
Remember, as a surgical procedure, the labiaplasty does come with a slight risk for complications. Bleeding, infection, asymmetry, scarring and nerve damage can occur. However, when women choose an experienced plastic surgeon, these complications are rare.
10. How bad is labiaplasty pain?
After labiaplasty, soreness and tenderness are to be expected. However, these symptoms are relatively short-lived. Many women find that over-the-counter pain medications help to keep them comfortable. If your pain is intense or doesn’t respond to medication, it’s time to call your surgeon’s office.
11. How long after labiaplasty can I shower?
You may take a complete shower with soap and water 48 hours after surgery. Be careful not to pull or tug on the incision lines or sutures. Use warm water. Do not soak in the bath until 3 weeks after surgery.
