Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty

When you meet a person, at first you notice their eyes. Unfortunately, our eyes are often the first facial feature that shows signs of aging. As skin ages, it gradually loses its elasticity. A lack of elasticity, combined with the relentless pull of gravity, causes excessive skin to collect in your upper and lower eyelids there are several surgical and non-surgical options to help people who are unsatisfied. Blepharoplasty is a surgical option whit magic result.

Blepharoplasty is a kind of surgery performed on the eyelids. It’s done to remove excess skin from the upper eyelids and reduce bagginess from the lower eyelids. It’s also called an eye lift. Blepharoplasty can reduce or get rid of these vision problems. This procedure can target the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both, depending on the patient’s goals.

The number of blepharoplasties performed has continued to increase over the last 20 years. Blepharoplasty continues to be the most common invasive cosmetic surgical procedure of the face.

Good candidate for blepharoplasty

The best candidates for blepharoplasty surgery are generally people at least 30 years old who are in good health and have no other eye conditions. Make sure to mention whether you have any of the following conditions:

  • Eye diseases such as glaucoma, dry eye, and detached retina
  • Thyroid diseases such as Graves’ disease, hypothyroidism, and hyperthyroidism
  • Heart disease, high blood pressure, and other circulatory diseases
  • Diabetes

Be realistic about the expectations you have for blepharoplasty. Eyelid surgery can enhance your appearance and help build your confidence. But you shouldn’t expect the surgery to drastically change your look. Before deciding to have a blepharoplasty, consider what you would like to achieve and discuss your goals and expectations with your surgeon.

Blepharoplasty Preparation

You’ll need to arrange for a trusted family member or friend to drive you home from surgery. They’ll also need to stay with you the first night after the procedure. Some people have dry eyes after surgery, but that rarely lasts more than 2 weeks. If you have dry eyes lasting more than 2 weeks, contact your doctor.

Your surgeon asks you to:

  • Get a medical evaluation or lab testing done.
  • Quit smoking.
  • Adjust your current medications or start taking certain medications.
  • Stop taking anti-inflammatory drugs, aspirin, blood thinners, multivitamins and herbal supplements, as they can all increase your risk of bleeding.

Blepharoplasty Procedure

An eye lift usually takes about 2 hours if both upper and lower eyelids are done together. Your doctor will most likely use local anesthesia (a painkiller injected around the eye) with oral sedation.

The surgeon will usually cut along the natural lines of your eyelids. Through these cuts, your surgeon will separate the skin from the underlying tissue and remove the excess fat and skin (and muscle if indicated). Next, the surgeon will close those cuts with very small stitches. The stitches in the upper lids will stay for 3-6 days. During a lower blepharoplasty, your surgeon will make an incision just below your lower eyelash line. They’ll remove excess skin in your lower eyelid through this incision. They may also use an incision hidden inside your lower eyelid (transconjunctival incision) to correct lower eyelid issues and redistribute or remove excess fat.

After the surgery, your doctor will probably put ointment in your eyes to keep them moist and cover them with cold compresses while you’re in the recovery room. Right after surgery, you may have blurry vision from the ointment and be sensitive to light. Your eyes may feel dry or watery. Expect to stay home from work and limit your activities for several days after surgery to allow your eyelids to heal.

Risks and Complications

Like all surgical procedures, blepharoplasty does have some risks. Fortunately, serious risks are rare. The risks you will face include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Dry eyes (or worsened dry eyes if you already have the condition)
  • Discoloration of your eyelids

Noticeable scarring

Difficulty closing your eyes (called ‘lid lag’ or lagophthalmos, which may be temporary)

Sagging outwards of your eyelid (called ectropion, this may require corrective surgery)

Temporarily blurred vision

Bleeding behind your eye (called retrobulbar hematoma, this rare complication is a medical emergency that can cause blindness)

If you smoke, you have a higher risk of complications. Quit at least one month before surgery.

Recovery

Although the surgery is typically painless, you may have some swelling and bruising. Most people feel comfortable going out in public after 10 to 14 days. But it can take a few months to heal completely.

During your blepharoplasty recovery, you can use cold compresses and antibiotic ointment to ease any swelling. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions that may include:

  • How to care for your eyes.
  • Medications to aid healing and reduce the potential for infection.
  • Specific concerns to look for at the surgical site.
  • When to follow up with your surgeon.

Play it safe and do not drive until your vision returns to normal.

Follow the instructions from your surgeon about how to care for yourself following surgery. Your instructions likely will include the following:

  • Use ice packs on your eyes for 10 minutes every hour on the first night after surgery and 4-5 times over the next day.
  • Use the prescribed eye drops or ointments.
  • Elevate your head above your chest while sleeping for a few nights.
  • Use cool compresses to help ease swelling.
  • Take acetaminophen (Tylenol) for pain.
  • Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, etc.), naproxen sodium (Aleve), naproxen (Naprosyn), or other drugs or supplements that increase the risk of bleeding. Your doctor can provide you with a full list of what to avoid.
  • Avoid heavy lifting or other strenuous activities and exercises for a week.
  • Don’t smoke.
  • Don’t rub your eyes.
  • Don’t wear contact lenses for about 2 weeks.

Chance of developing blood clots and/or pneumonia, and avoid constipation. (Narcotics). Avoid activities that raise your blood pressure, including bending, lifting and rigorous sports. Keep activities to a minimum for 3-5 days; avoid strenuous activities for 2-3 weeks.

Once the bandages are removed, and most of the swelling goes down, you’ll start looking more like yourself. Most people can resume normal activities in 7 to 10 days and strenuous activities after 2 weeks. The final results of the eyelid surgery will be apparent after about 6 weeks.

Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications), Vitamin E, herbal supplements or any medications containing these compounds for two weeks before surgery.

To do that, it’s a good idea to limit your reading, TV watching, and computer use, at least for the first few days after surgery. Odds are that your eyes might feel so dry and tired that the idea of trying to focus on a screen or read text in a book doesn’t sound very appealing anyway.

3-7 days after: Eyes can begin being washed gently with water and soap. When towel drying, pat lightly. It’s important to avoid picking at scabs as they will fall off when they are ready to – this is part of the natural healing process.

After eyelid surgery, it may take about two to three weeks for your vision to return to normal. During the first few days, you may have blurry and double vision caused by eyelid swelling that is usually temporary.

Walking is considered to be one of the best types of exercise after a Blepharoplasty. Blood circulation is improved and this helps to minimize the risk of blood clots and speed up recovery. You should initially start slowly and carefully and build up gradually over first three week.

As part of their guidance, they recommend the use of premium makeup products to effectively conceal any incision lines or skin irritation that may be associated with eyelid surgery. Makeup application can aid in achieving a more youthful appearance during the ongoing healing process.

The appearance of the eyes can be dramatically altered by the removal of excess skin or puffy bags under the eyes. Eyes that are weighed down or crowded by aging skin or puffy bulges may seem smaller or narrower.

Excess removal of skin in an initial eyelid procedure can cause severe issues for the patient. The most severe complications arise from changes in the lower eyelid contour, which lead to retraction and greater exposure of the eye.

Your eyelids will probably look puffy after surgery. The incisions will probably look red, too. The swelling and bruising involved with blepharoplasty recovery tend to resemble a black eye. That is all normal.

Topical Antibiotics: Apply 2-3 drops of Tobradex (requires prescription) to each eye for 5 days following surgery. Eye drops & ointments: Dry eyes after blepharoplasty is a common condition.

Silicone gel sheets are a clinically effective method to flatten eyelid scars. In the first four weeks after eyelid reduction, you should refrain from applying any topical skin care products to the eyelids as this may interfere with healing.

Generally, it takes about two to four weeks for the initial healing, during which time the incisions may appear red and swollen. Over time, the redness and swelling will subside, and the incisions will gradually fade. It can take up to a year for the incisions to reach their final appearance.
